Who are some of your favorite women rockers?
Emily Haines of Metric. She’s got a great voice and a unique approach to songwriting. I truly think that need more Canadian female rockers on games like Guitar Hero, she would be a great addition.
Also a favourite of mine is Feist. She’s originally from Toronto and from the band Broken Social Scene, but ever since going solo she’s blown audiences away. The ipod commercial to her song was a big step in her career. I saw her in Kitchener this year and she keeps playing larger shows. However, I think she deserves the fame. She’s modest, writes great music and is a really great performer too with creative ideas.
I agree, Feist is absolutely amazing! I love her original music as well as her covers – like Nina Simone’s Sea Lion Woman/Sinner Man, and the Beegee’s Inside and Out. Her voice is distinctive and Ithink that’s one of the things that makes a female rocker stand out. I saw her live as the final act at Parliament Hill on Canada’s Day last year and she was amazing!
I also like Stevie Nicks, and Blondie as well…and of course Janis Joplin!
Feist is all right, and I like Heart. Metric is awesome :).
My favorites are: Dolores O’Riordan, of the Cranberries; Joan Jett, of Joan Jett + the Blackhearts; Grace Slick, of Jefferson Airplane. Also, Liela Moss singer of a more modern band, The Duke Spirit, reminds me a bit of Grace Slick (Listen to “The Step and the Walk”). Karen O, of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is pretty good too.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are amazing! Gold Lion is a great song.
Heart’s Crazy on You is definitely a hit too. If you’ve seen the film the Virgin Suicides, you’ll see that it totally enhances the scene it’s in!
I had forgotten to add Björk. As a soloist, she is more of a electronica/pop singer, but when she was with The Sugarcubes she was definitley rockin’ out.

Yeah, go Bjork!

Bjork is such a progressive, hold-nothing-back artist. “It’s Oh So Quiet” is a very interesting song.
Oh man, once a friend of mine did “It’s Oh So Quiet” for a karaoke song! It was the best! I saw Heart play about a week ago, Krista, and that Crazy on You song is still in my head! They seemed genuinely happy to be playing for us!
Also, I listened/have been listening to Feist for about a month now. I LOVE IT! Thanks again for sharing Krista!

That’s great you’re enjoying Feist! If you liked her, you should check out the band she was apart of for a while, they’re called Broken Social Scene.
I actually forgot to mention a couple of my favourite artists here. Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor are more alternatively mellow rockers. They definitely put their own spin on their music and I have a lot of respect for those who strive for that.
Check out this video of my friend’s sister performing It’s Oh So Quiet as part of the Canadian Broadway reality television show called “How do you solve a problem like Maria?”.
Miley Cyrus, because her music sounds pumping at the bars.

You’ve got to be kidding!? Do you honestly believe Miley Cyrus has any singing talent? You can like her music if you so choose, but in my opinion she has no vocal range, her music doesn’t have true feeling (she doesn’t write her own songs), and she whines too much. An occasional one of her songs could have a good club beat, but that doesn’t even remotely make it… music. And that ends my rant :p.
acrosstheuniverse, you’re friend is awesome :) I always think that song sounds like it’s from a broadway musical or something; it just has that feel.

Yeah, she’s really great! Her name is Allie Hughes, and she was one of the top ten contestants on the show. It was really too bad that she was eliminated, however she was touring in her own band prior to the show, so hopefully her touring career will be relaunched!
I doubt Andrew was being serious. Although I have to give it to her that she’s still staying “wholesome” in the eyes of today’s youth. There aren’t many role models for them to look up to.
Joan Baez anyone? A woman who plays the guitar and sings like an angel.
What more could a man ask for?
I just realized we mostly have vocalists here. But there are girls on instruments too…
Take Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads glory. She stood up behind the bass, a place where I don’t think many girls stood before, in a New Wave band during the 70s. She showed everyone that girls can rock just as well as guys- the Talking Heads bass-lines are mostly incredible, maintaining rhythm and simplicity . Tina rocks.
I’m adding M.I.A. to the list. She’s pretty unique, I wouldn’t call her rock and I wouldn’t call her alternative. She’s probably best classified as “other”. But M.I.A. is “rocking” the music world with her unique sound and style. From Sri Lanka to London and South East United Kingdom, M.I.A. is challenging my perception of the music scene with each song that hits my ears.
